Intelligent Options with Domain Name Research

By Luke Barton

You have two choices when it comes to business domain name research; it can be tough and frustrating or fun and pretty easy. If you're not looking in the right direction, you may simply settle down for something that's not worth it. You need to operate from a position of knowledge and informed state if you want the best results. Never think you do not have the power and ability to put yourself into a leveraged position.

You really never want to have a name that can be easily confused with something else; so make that check first. That is or can be important, so you should take that precaution prior to buying your new name.

Besides, why on earth would you want to be almost like somebody else? You might come up with a great name for your website, but it might be too similar to another existing one. You will lose on traffic and it'll be hard to create a brand when your domain name looks too common. Naturally, you never have to believe us, but how can you not see the logic in this suggestion?

Hyphens more or less went out of style many years ago, and of course we do suggest you totally avoid numbers. In some case, you may have to settle down for a domain name with hyphens/numbers when you don't get your original choice. But if you look at it from marketing and branding perspective, it's better to avoid such names. You know the kind of domains that look good and professional, and they are dot coms that are fairly short and read well. What will occur is you will make your business, marketing and branding efforts that much more difficult.

Once in a while some unusual things can occur with domain names, and we will address one right now. You should try to keep away from names that give away a different meaning when read. Before you register, read it out loud and if it sounds okay because sometimes when two words come together they just sound wrong and they look like they've got another meaning. So just be sure you never forget about doing this if you want to save yourself the heartache of changing your name. There is no going back once you have picked your domain name. So if you have been thinking of setting up a long term business, you need to get it right on your first try. Sure, you can move your domain name later on but why bother? In order to build your brand through the domain name you choose, you need to remember that your target audience must identify with it. If they aren't able to connect to it, you shouldn't have it in the first place. So, to find success with your domain name choice make sure you take these tips to heart and put them to use.
